Part One: The Hearth and the Salamander. Summary: Set in the 24th century, Fahrenheit opens with Guy Montag, the protagonist, in the middle of a regular night at is a fireman, and in the 24th century, firemen burn down houses where illegal books are kept. The majority of the salamanders we spotted on our night out were Plethodontids. They were taking advantage of the especially foggy night. Red-backed and gray-cheeked salamanders were spotted climbing trees and running through ferns on the search for their prey: ants, mites and other small insects.

The boy responds with answers that are likewise reasonable—to him—but recognizable as a flight of fancy to more mature readers of the book. With each response he brings more and more of the salamander’s forest habitat into his bedroom until at the end of the book the only recognizable element of the bedroom is the bed the boy is sleeping in. The only salamander depicted in De Lapide Philosophico (or The little book of the noble old German philosopher Lambsprinck) of is found in Figure X. Above this emblem the text: A salamander lives in the fire, which imparts to it a most glorious hue. And below the emblem this text.

Roberts and Linda Sillitoe previously and I will probably read it again. I remember when all this happened and I find the story as fascinating today as I did so many years ago. Salamander was so nearly a really good book.
